Last week we talked about listening with care.ย we noted that being silent and asking questions helps us connect with others.ย This week is a reminder that when we speak, it’s not what we say, but how what we say is received.ย Let me give you a couple of written examples:
Stop clubbing seals is a different statement from stop clubbing, seals
Let’s eat grandma has a whole different meaning than Let’s eat, grandma.
Twenty five-dollar bills is greater than Twenty-five dollar bills (which don’t actually exist)
The same is true in verbal communication.ย Too many times, I’ve said something and thought later, why did I say it that way?
Being in the moment is vital to communication.ย It can change the whole outcome and reception of a conversation.
