Patients often say to me, “You’re always so positive, do you ever have bad days?”
The answer to this question really depends on your outlook to life.ย Sure “bad” things happen to me and I have what others would call “bad days.”ย But I remember what I was taught when I was young, “when you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”ย Could I have acted differently or made a decision that would change the “bad” outcome?ย When so, what would I do differently?ย And in that case, is it really “bad” that I learned something about the world or myself or life today?
It took Edison 1000 attempts to invent the light bulb.ย Were 999 of them “bad”?
A baseball hitter gets out 7-8 times every ten at-bats, does that make them “bad”?
Sure, on the level, there are days when I hurt.ย The heat and humidity of summer does that to me.ย I get injured.ย But I know full well that I’ll heal.ย I’ve had COVID twice.ย I’m still living…. MY… LIFE.ย My wife and I argue.ย We’re human.ย My kids anger me, and I them.ย We’re normal.ย But I wouldn’t put the judgement of “bad” on any of these incidents.ย They just “are” and we learn from them.
So how do I do it?ย Lot’s of practice, prayer, and a small, solid inner circle.
