“It’s not fun but it’s worth it.
Going through change is hard.ย But we have to go THROUGH it.ย When I look back on my past year plus, it’s been a challenge to say the least.ย My daughter got married and moved out.ย That’s a big change.ย The house is different.ย It’s neither better or worse, just different.ย Weddings are expensive, so I’ve watched the bank account dwindle.ย Again, nothing wrong or bad, just different.ย Now Tony is graduating college and getting married.ย So again, different.ย He won’t be home as much, even less then when he was away at school.
For a while there, I was holding on to the past too tightly. I didn’t want these changes to occur, and resisted rather than embracing them. I mean, I have always wanted this for them; to move out, launch, find their lives with someone they love, and to be happy for them.ย All of that still exists here in my heart.ย But I see now that my appreciation for life and growth was lost for a while.ย I forgot that with all the growth we’ve undergone, there is an inevitable plateau and dip, but then eventually growth happens once again.ย I recognize that I am in that dip, and will be coming out of it soon enough.
Our health and well-being are just like this.ย Regardless of symptoms or condition, the healing process is a cycle: improvement, plateau, dip, repeat.ย Far too often, patients become afraid that itโs all over when they hit those first plateau and dip phases.ย I would encourage them to realize that theyโve just reached the completion of their first cycle. On the other side of the plateau and dip, is greater growth, improvement, and continued healing.ย Health and healing are a continuous process of improvement, plateau, dip, repeat.
