Please allow me to let you in on a little secret, the body heals itself; it happens no other way.
Two weekends ago I had a little project to replace the knobs on my kds shower. I wore gloves the whole time, except for the last knob. I took the glove off because I needed to do something dexterous. I remember saying to myself, “oh, I haven’t had any incidents this project, I can do it without the glove. for this one last knob.” Sure enough, I slipped and took a good chunk of skin out of two of my knuckles.
Right now this story can go one of two ways, it can stick with the headline and we can talk about how the body heals itself or we can talk about how the gloves are a metaphor for wearing a mask right now. The reality is, both are true.
Last week, someone asked me “Why don’t you wear a mask and gloves.?” My response was about self healing and how contraction of the virus brings out life-long immunity. The more people whom catch the virus brings about herd immunity faster. Also that the homemade masks are doing nothing because the virus can travel in and out of them unless you’re wearing an actual N95 or surgical mask. I cited conversations with our nurses and hygienists who are practice members and how all the glove wearing is still cross contaminating because the general public uses only one glove rather than a new glove for each different item you touch as is proper process.
So now here is reality. When I called our medical office products supplier, They told me they wouldn’t allow the purchase because we’re a Chiropractic office and non-essential to their business. I responded by reminding the company that the State of CT deems us essential, the federal government deems us essential and both grant us physician status. The response was that Chiropractic is considered non-essential to our business.
Prejudice is prejudice regardless of it’s form. So i’m looking for a new medical supplier if any of you know of one.
These two above stories lead to a great question, why stay open? or it’s sister question, why not shut down?
Because one ideal I hold firm to is service. I believe in allowing people to make what they feel is the right decision for themselves. If you feel you are high risk, or, for what ever your reason, it’s best for you to stay home. Do so. But don’t tell others how to live their lives. Don’t tell others what they “should” or “Shouldn’t” do or be. Chiropractic helps optimize your bodily function. It helps connect you to your inner innate. and I as a chiropracTOR am here to help serve you. So many of you understand and “get it” that receiving your adjustments is strengthening you and keeping you well. I 100% know, with absolute certainty that being connected to your innate is the best item on the list of healthy actions to take. It would be a dis-service to close at a time like this.
I’m not here to force you to do something against your will. I’m not here to tell you how or what you ought to think, say or do. I’m here to offer perspective and and yes, hopefully, you will think about that perspective, consider it, and yes, I hope you agree with it. Because I know it’s right.
Early in my career I had a conversation with a UCONN geneticist who became a patient. We were talking about causes. His point of view was that genes are our cause. I asked how do genes know what to do? He responded with “proteins”. I asked how do proteins know what to do? He said “amino acids”. I asked how do amino acids know what to do? He stopped and asked how long this would go on for? I said, as long as it take to get back to the beginning. Because that’s science and research. Because that’s our cause. He said, i’m not here to take leaps of faith. I said that’s fine but if we are going to talk about cause then sooner or later, we all have to.
