Some years ago when I was attending North Georgia College a few friends and I would go walking and hiking in the woods. We would park our car and take one of the trails that went far up into the hills where my friend could let her German shepherd walk without a leash. After a few trips we got to know the trails by heart.
One day we brought another friend with us and we all got so busy talking that we didnโt notice where we were. Finally my friend looked at her watch and said, โGosh, I have to get back and go to my evening class! Which way do we go?โ Thatโs when I realized we were lost.
We were surrounded by woods and couldn’t see too far ahead of us. After trying several times to retrace our steps, we lost all sense of direction. โWait a minute,โ Chloe said. โIf anyone knows the way back its Diggerโ (the German shepherd).
She looked at Digger, and in a commanding voice said, โDigger, take us home!โ
Digger brushed past us to lead the way. But after a little while, both of us knew it wasnโt the way we had come. Digger had taken us off the trail and was leading us up and down some pretty steep hills. He was full of confidence and kept looking back at us as if to reassure us. But the farther we went, the more nervous we got.
Then, suddenly, we came out of the woods and into a huge meadow. At the end of the meadow we looked down a slope and saw the parking lot far below us. โWeโre home!โ we all shouted as we commenced to make it to the car with a little more spring in our step.
โShe knew where she was going all the time,โ my friend said. โIt just wasnโt the same way we came.โ
โNo,โ I agreed, it was a better way.
Since then Iโve always tried to remember that when I ask God for guidanceโand I do it oftenโI have to trust Him to know which way is best for me. Even if I havenโt gone that way before.
