Labor Day is a celebration of the American Worker and more than grills and picnics.ย The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York City.ย It was a pic-nic and parade dedicated to the workers who built and labored within the city.ย It was conceived as appreciation during the industrial revolution.
We are not far from that original concept.ย The difference being that the labor force has diversified.ย What was once hard factory work has become a series of professional workers, such as doctors and nurses; public service like teachers and first responders, and corporate associates.ย Lets not forget the backbone of American workers, the family owned and operated small business whom both own and work their American Dream.
To me, keeping alive the American Dream is the true essence of Labor Day.ย Regardless of our country of origin, political side, sexual orientation, or race, we can all live out our own American Dream by Laboring through our tough times, riding the wave of excitement during the well-off times, and continuing to take another step toward our dream during every time.
While we are pic-nicing with our loved ones, lets be sure to dream aloud as our forefathers did on that first Labor Day and give thanks for what and whom we are Laboring for.
Happy Labor Day!
