While there is one Chiropractic, Chiropractors come in as many shapes, sizes, and philosophies as motor vehicles. As we speak with more and more people who have used Chiropractic for one purpose or another, we have heard just as many descriptions of what happened to them in the office. So, I ask, Is your Chiropractor a Lexus or a Bulldozer when is comes to their adjusting?
The Bulldozer Chiropractor
We recently had a patient start care with us who described their previous Chiropractor as a bulldozer. When you think of a bulldozer what do you see in your mind? In my mind, bulldozers throw their weight around and destroy rather than build.
This person described their experience: “He came up from behind me and without telling me, put me in a bear hug and lifted me off the ground against his belly. He didn’t tell me what he was going to do, how he was going to do it or what I would feel. I felt violated.”
Another patient told us of their previous Chiropractor: “She was a little thing and when she adjusted me, I’d swear she jumped off the ground and punched me in the back. It hurt and I never went back, because I thought all Chiropractors did this.”
Unfortunately, this is a visual that many people have when they think of a Chiropractor adjusting them. I’ve even seen such actions in various offices. Thankfully, they are very rare and if you have experienced this, I assure you, just as there are bad apples, the good adjusters outnumber the bad.
The Camry Chiropractor
When I think of a Camry, I think its reliable, standard, nothing flashy, but will get me from point A to point B without breaking down. Their price is right for anyone and you’ll pass one without even noticing it because there are so many on the road. They come with standards like a radio and AC. Their options are limited, maybe a sunroof, and current safety options like a rear view camera, but not fancy like turbo, all-wheel drive or lane departure warning. They are good vehicles and you rarely hear about anything going wrong with them.
I personally feel most Chiropractors fit into this category. Like many health care providers, they do their job well and are proficient. Many of these doctors go forever. They provide adjustments, maybe even dabble in other areas of health like nutrition or physical therapy. Their people love them and they help many patients every day.
The Ferrari Chiropractor
Ferrari’s are fast, loud, and smooth. They handle well and hug the ground. There is a loving relationship between car and driver. Ferrari’s are all hand made and hold themselves to a higher standard than production vehicles.
Chiropractors in this category not only share information, they inspire and may even point out whats wrong with something else. You know their opinion, but its done without beating you over the brow. When you are adjusted by one of them, you may look up and ask, “we’re done?” or “that’s it?” Their adjustments feel like a warm loving hug. You’ll develop a special bond with this Chiropractor, to the point they’ll become “my doctor.”
The next time you hear about a friend or family member being bulldozed by a Chiropractor, remind them that there are good and bad in every profession. Tell them about your experience and the relationship you have with your Chiropractor. Those of us who are Camry and Ferrari love helping folks see how good Chiropractic is for you.
