Today we bring you the final installment of our “5 Reasons Why” series. ย We hope you have enjoyed reading as much as we have enjoyed writing. ย This month, we take a look at 5 Reasons Why Skiiers Need Chiropractic…
1.ย Garage Sales
Every person who has ever strapped a pair of boards to their feet and skied down the side of a mountain has fallen. ย For those who have attempted a trick, or gone (a little) out of control, the inevitable “Garage Sale” which leaves your gear spewed all over the mountain is proof enough that you need to get checked by a Chiropractor. ย Such falls typically end with the skier landing on their back side, bouncing a couple of more times with a roll over or two for good measure. ย Typically your hat or helmet are 20 yards uphill, poles are 10 yards to the right or left and a ski is still skidding down the mountain as you look up at the monster jump you just attempted and failed at. ย While sailing through the air at 30 MPH is fun, it’s when you don’t stick the landing that hurts you.
2.ย Helmets are getting cooler every year, but still aren’t enough
Helmets are a significant advancement to curb head injuries in all sports, including skiing. ย Playing paddleball with your head on hard pack snow not only damages your skull, but more importantly your neck. ย during a ski fall, even with helmets, the neck is still free to move violently, similar to a whiplash injury from an auto accident.
3.ย Did you see Lindsey Vonn’s fallย a couple years ago… do you think it was just her knee that was injured?
The stronger the skier legs, the stronger the skier. ย When falls occur, it is most commonly the knees that get injured. ย Spine injuries are also common in skiing accidents. ย When a skier injures their spine, the nerve system also gets damaged, interfering with nerve flow through the system to each cell, organ and tissue in the body. ย This interferes with healing and recovery from the injuries. ย Don’t ever ignore the rest of your body when you injure a joint like your knee or elbow.
4.ย The body was built to adapt, but subluxations make you cold
Subluxation is an interference of nerve (neural) transmission. ย The bones and surrounding tissues of the spine compress the nerves as they exit between the vertebrae (back-bones) and get pinched. ย like a light switch turning off the power to a light bulb, pinched nerves interfere with communication between brain and body. ย When connected properly, the body adapts because it is alive.
5.ย Subluxated people do silly things on ski mountains and I have the story to prove it.
I did a little ski racing in college. ย We were a club level sport, not sanctioned or governed by the NCAA but did race against other colleges in from New England and New York. ย We did well and let’s just say we had our share of fun. ย I had a bit of a crazy streak in me back then, I enjoyed life and let’s just say I was subluxated… During the last race of the year, it was common for the racers to go all out wearing costumes and finding original ways of getting down the mountain and still qualify a race time. ย The last race of my year, I woreย a sock and did my best impression of the Red Hot Chili Peppers as I ran my gates. ย That was the coldest minute of my life, it was also my slowest race time ever. ย Iย wish I had a Chiropractor at the top of the hill to adjust me at the time, but you only get to live once.
If you are a skier, get checked by a Chiropractor on a regular basis to ensure your season goes smoothly and your body recovers from the rigors required of staying upright.
