I recently came across an article written by a female chiropractor about why a pregnant woman needs chiropractic. It dawned on me that I never see the same article written for men, by a man, from a manโs perspective about how we can support our wives during pregnancy. So here it isโฆ 5 Reasons Pregnant Women Need Chiropractic, FOR MEN (by a man)
Guys, you know as well as I do that as a man, I have no business writing this article. As a husband and Chiropractor, what I am about to write is vital to the life of a pregnant woman and YOUR developing baby. Itโs one thing to be all tough and at time disconnected, but when we get down to it, we love our wives, girlfriends and (soon to be born) children. So this article is for you, so that you can learn about how to best support her during those special nine+ monthsโฆ
1. Subluxations are a leading contributor to back pain and sleeplessness
Fatherโs to be, how often has your spouse experienced some level of back pain? Standing at work, walking while doing the groceries or when the baby getโs into โthatโ positionโฆ. I know youโve heard about โthatโ position. We had three kids and each time, I knew when it was time to check my wife for subluxation. Thankfully she had been adjusted regularly for five years prior to her first pregnancy; so compared to her friends, she experienced far fewer of those painful days. And when they did occur (and they did) they were much more manageable.
Regarding sleeplessnessโฆ subluxations in the upper neck interfere with the sleep centers of the brain making you lose sleep. A sleepless mom is an unhappy one. Whatโs your life like when mom is unhappy?
2. Chiropractic helps keep the baby face down and certain techniques can help turn a baby around when they are feet down
I know what you a re thinkingโฆ. โso what, why does this matter?โ Feet first (โbreech birthโ) deliveries are among the most painful and longest deliveries a woman can experienceโฆ IF they are allowed to progress. I say โIFโ because most commonly such a birth, results in a c-section.
C-section is a major surgery that subluxates your infant child at the neck due to the way the child is lifted out of the womb. When the neck is subluxated, sleeplessness, heart and breathing issues can result. Some subluxation are asymptomatic, meaning there are no symptoms, but the nerve interference still remains undetected and affecting your child.
3. Pregnant women experience shorter deliveries
We all know the classic TV and movie depiction of child birthโฆ a pregnant, (subluxated) woman is lying on the delivery room bed, feet in the air in the worst pain theyโve ever experienced, screaming profanities at the husband, punching him and throwing anything they can get their hands on at him. Where do you think that image comes from?
Contrast that with a (Subluxation-free)) woman who delivered three children. The first delivery was four hours long, the second was two hours and the third an hour and a half. She is focused, understands her purpose in the moment, and willingly delivers a child in happiness. This was my wife and her experience is shared by countless other Chiropractorโs wives and practice members around the globe.
Which experience do you prefer your wife to have?
Here is some supportive research.
4. Chiropractors support assisted deliveriesโฆ as in working WITH gravity
First, remember when you were younger and the standard shift car your buddy was driving stalled out and you had to โpop the clutchโ? โฆ Are you pushing that car up the hill or down it? Only a subluxated person is pushing that car uphill.
When a woman lays down on her back the birth canal is angled up, against gravity. When she stands or squats it is angled down and works with gravityโฆ Delivery isnโt supposed to oppose gravity like a gym workout, yet OBโs have turned it into one because itโs easier for them. Protect your wife during delivery by bringing up this point with your OB routinely during her pregnancy check-ups
Secondly, Would you rather fit a king sized bed through a two foot wide doorway or a three foot wide doorway? When your wife squats during delivery, it actually widens the birth canal, making the delivery easier.
But weโre not talking about cars and beds, weโre talking about your wife and child and whatโs best for them.
5. The most traumatic experience in life is birth and it often results in a subluxation
Think about itโฆ When you are inside of momโs womb itโs all warm and comfy, youโre well nourished and everything is done for youโฆ a developing baby IS the King of their castle. Then itโs all ripped away from them with a blinding light and itโs cold and they canโt do anything for themselves.
Plus your infant child just โsqueezed their head though the bannister railingโ. Because infantโs bones are plyable they shift around (thatโs why infants have that cone shaped head). And if they were delivered with forceps, vacuum extraction, or c-section, their head was rotated over 180 degrees and pulled on by the OB. If your buddy whoโs never handled a baby picked your child up by the head and twisted itโs head, youโd kick him in the groin and out of your houseโฆ but thatโs how our infants are delivered into the world most commonly. That results in a subluxation.
Subluxations interfere with the power flowing through nerves the way a dimmer switch interferes with the electricity in the dining room. What is seen and experienced can varyโฆ it may be pain, heart or lung issues or nothing at all. But if you leave the switch dimmed, the dining room never experiences full light. Subluxation makes our infants live the first days, months and years of their life at less than 100% when they arenโt check soon after birth. Subluxations also makes carrying and delivering the infant that much more difficult on our wives.
Chiropractors are specifically trained to detect and correct subluxations, keeping them at bay and minimizing their effects on our lives.
Guys, becoming a father is one of the best experiences life has to offer. Letโs make sure we are supporting our wives and infant children with regular chiropractic check-ups. Only your local Chiropractor can make a determination as to what frequency is appropriate for her during that time.
